Residential living trends for families and aging populations

Residential design trends are shifting to accommodate different life stages, focusing on floor plans that balance functionality with changing household needs.

For families, single-story living or bungalows offer advantages by eliminating stairs, which can improve safety for small children and ease movement between rooms. This layout allows for better visibility across the home, such as monitoring children from the kitchen, and simplifies daily tasks like tidying up.

Conversely, as children leave the home, many homeowners face the challenge of living in spaces that are too large for their current needs. Data from the 2022 census indicates that owner-occupied households where the primary earner is at least 65 years old average 78.1 square meters per person. Transitioning to smaller, more compact homes can reduce maintenance and energy use while maintaining quality of life through thoughtful layouts that provide both open communal areas and private retreats.
