Residents in Las Lomas warn of flood risks due to dike deterioration

Residents of the Las Lomas district in the Piura region of Peru have reported significant deterioration of the Chaquirosse ravine dike, raising fears of potential flooding during intense rainfall.

The existing defense structure, constructed with gabions (wire mesh filled with stones), is reportedly broken, with stones dispersed and the area heavily overgrown with vegetation. This lack of maintenance prevents the free flow of water and compromises the structure's ability to divert currents toward the Jalados ravine.

Local citizen Alfonso Castillo warned that a collapse could flood the urban center of Las Lomas, directly impacting homes, the central market, the local medical clinic, and the church. Residents noted that while previous municipal administrations have prepared technical files and temporary cleaning plans, no definitive construction work has been executed to reinforce the defenses.
