Pedro Brand residents protest property compensation for highway construction
Residents of the Duarte Highway in the Pedro Brand municipality have entered their third consecutive day of protests. The demonstrations aim to demand fair and equitable compensation for properties slated for eviction to facilitate the construction of elevated structures on the highway.
Protesters, including Yonael Núñez, state that the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) is offering amounts that represent less than half of the actual market value of the land. Residents noted that while they do not oppose municipal development, the current proposals would not allow them to acquire new housing in the area. A significant point of contention is that many residents purchased their land without formal titles, leading authorities to offer compensation only for the structures rather than the land itself.
