Residents in Spain protest local infrastructure and waste projects
In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, residents of the Somosierra and García Escámez neighborhoods held a peaceful protest against recent municipal works. Protesters claim that the placement of waste containers has eliminated parking spaces and obscured a pedestrian crossing, creating road safety risks. The group also expressed concern regarding the aesthetic and environmental impact of waste accumulation near the San Fernando Rey church, a site protected as a Cultural Interest Asset (BIC). Residents have submitted a petition to the City Council demanding immediate solutions for traffic management and the relocation of containers.
In the Madrid region, hundreds of people from Titulcia, Ciempozuelos, and the Las Vegas area demonstrated against a proposed waste macro-incinerator project by the multinational company PreZero. The planned facility, located near the Jarama and Tajuña rivers, has sparked fears regarding air pollution, including emissions of dioxins, furans, and heavy metals. The 'No to the Titulcia Incinerator' platform is calling on local and regional authorities to deny necessary licenses and environmental authorizations to protect public health and the local agricultural environment.
