Residents in Tacna demand prevention works following 2020 mudslide
Nearly seven years after a devastating mudslide in the Quebrada del Diablo region of Tacna, Peru, residents of the La Florida, San Pedro, and El Mirador housing associations report they remain exposed to disaster risks. The 2020 emergency destroyed over 200 homes and resulted in three deaths.
Local leaders, including Isidro Mamani of the El Mirador association, state that promised solutions have not materialized. Residents are calling for the execution of a formal diversion project for the ravine to protect families from future mudslides. While some temporary dikes have been installed, community members describe them as insufficient. Many families have returned to the area despite the danger because they have no alternative housing options.
