Residents protest biomethane projects in Alenquer and Torres Novas

Residents and local authorities in Alenquer and Torres Novas are protesting against two proposed biomethane production projects by the company Gás da Terra. Over 10,000 signatures have been collected by citizen movements and public service user commissions to urge the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) and the government not to authorize the installations.

The first project in Árgea (Torres Novas) aims to treat approximately 100,000 tons of organic waste and livestock effluents annually, located roughly 200 meters from residential areas. The second project in Marés (Alenquer) plans to process over 84,000 tons of animal byproducts, including slaughterhouse remains, situated about 400 meters from homes.

Opponents cite concerns regarding the impact on quality of life, the proximity of waste treatment to housing, and the increased heavy truck traffic on local roads not designed for such use. Local municipalities, including Torres Novas and Entroncamento, have expressed formal opposition to the project locations.
