Turkey health experts warn of early rise in influenza cases

Medical experts in Turkey are warning of an early surge in influenza and other respiratory infections, leading to increased activity in hospital emergency departments. The rise in cases is attributed to falling temperatures and the reopening of schools.

Five major medical associations—including TAHUD, EKMUD, TEMD, HFS-Eurasia, and TİHUD—have released the ‘Multidisciplinary Consensus Report 2026’. The report recommends that everyone over six months of age receive a flu vaccine, with high-risk groups requiring annual doses. For the 2026-2027 Northern Hemisphere season, experts suggest trivalent vaccines targeting A(H1N1)pdm09, A(H3N2), and B/Victoria strains.

Health professionals advise that individuals with high fever lasting more than three days, shortness of breath, or persistent cough should seek immediate medical attention. High-risk groups include those aged 65 and older, individuals with chronic heart or lung diseases, diabetics, pregnant women, and the immunocompromised. Preventive measures such as hand hygiene, mask-wearing in crowded areas, and proper ventilation are also emphasized.
