Respiratory illness prevention strategies for winter and travel
As temperatures drop, health experts are highlighting the rise of seasonal respiratory illnesses, including influenza, COVID-19, and RSV. Medical professionals note that increased indoor activities and close contact during the colder months contribute to the spread of these infections.
To mitigate risks while traveling, particularly on planes, experts recommend maintaining strict hand hygiene and wearing masks. While mask mandates have largely ended, they remain an effective tool for reducing the transmission of airborne viruses like influenza.
Additionally, discussions regarding measles outbreaks emphasize the importance of the MMR vaccine. Unlike the measles virus, which can induce ‘immune amnesia’ by causing the body to forget how to fight previously overcome infections, the vaccine allows individuals to maintain protection against other diseases like polio and diphtheria.
