Respiratory illnesses surge in Barbados and India
Medical professionals in Barbados and India are reporting significant increases in respiratory illnesses and flu-like symptoms.
In Barbados, the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners (BAMP) has issued a warning following an advisory from the Ministry of Health and Wellness regarding a rise in COVID-19 and influenza. BAMP President Dr. Lynda Williams advised the public to use rapid antigen kits for testing and to practice good respiratory hygiene, such as frequent hand washing and ensuring proper room ventilation. She recommended that symptomatic individuals stay home from work and that high-risk groups, including seniors and frontline workers, receive the influenza vaccine.
Similarly, in Goa, India, physicians report that flu cases have nearly doubled compared to the previous year. Pediatricians have noted a surge in viral fever, cough, and throat infections among both children and adults. The rise in infections has led to increased school absences as parents keep children home to recover and prevent further transmission within households and classrooms. Medical experts in the region are urging parents to prioritize rest and hydration rather than self-administering antibiotics for viral symptoms.
