Respiratory infections rise in Kalimantan amid forest fires

Health authorities in Kalimantan are responding to a surge in acute respiratory infection (ISPA) cases linked to forest and land fires (karhutla). In Central Kalimantan, cases reached 72,431 by week 33 of 2026, with Palangka Raya recording the highest number at 16,166. Other high-incidence areas include Kotawaringin Barat, Kotawaringin Timur, and Kapuas.

Health officials have identified high-risk groups, including toddlers, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with pre-existing conditions such as asthma, COPD, heart disease, or hypertension. There is particular concern for children under five, as respiratory issues can progress to pneumonia.

The South Kalimantan Health Office has instructed all healthcare facilities to strengthen early detection and management of ISPA through weekly surveillance reports from hospitals and community health centers (puskesmas). Residents are advised to practice healthy hygiene, maintain good air circulation, and wear masks in crowded areas to mitigate the risks posed by smoke and poor air quality.
