Respiratory syncytial virus and influenza comparison

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza are both highly contagious respiratory infections that typically circulate during fall and winter months. While they share overlapping symptoms, they are caused by different pathogens and require distinct approaches to prevention and treatment.

RSV is known for causing bronchiolitis and pneumonia, particularly in infants, young children, and older adults or those with weakened immune systems. The virus spreads through respiratory droplets and can survive on surfaces for several hours, making transmission common in schools and daycare centers. While most healthy adults experience mild symptoms, vulnerable populations may face severe respiratory distress.
