Respiratory virus prevention efforts intensify in Ecuador and Chile

Health authorities in Ecuador and Chile are intensifying efforts to combat the circulation of various respiratory viruses through vaccination and prevention measures.

In Ecuador, the Ministry of Public Health is promoting the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) vaccine for pregnant women in Tungurahua. The immunization is recommended between the 26th and 38th weeks of gestation to allow the transfer of antibodies through the placenta, protecting infants during their first six months of life. This measure aims to reduce the risk of severe complications such as pneumonia and bronchiolitis.

In Chile, the O’Higgins Region is reporting the circulation of six different respiratory viruses, including rhinovirus, RSV, influenza A and B, adenovirus, and metapneumovirus. Health authorities have expanded influenza vaccine access to the general population and are urging citizens to maintain hygiene and ventilation practices to reduce contagion risks.
