Respiratory virus season brings focus on flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccinations
As the colder season approaches, medical professionals are highlighting the resurgence of respiratory viruses, including influenza, COVID-19, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).
In the United States, updated COVID-19 vaccines have been approved by the FDA and are becoming available in pharmacies and clinics. Major medical organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, are providing guidance on vaccination as federal recommendations have undergone changes. Experts emphasize that nearly everyone aged six months and older should receive the flu vaccine.
Vulnerable populations remain at the highest risk for severe complications, such as pneumonia. These groups include the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, or cardiovascular disease, as well as those with weakened immune systems. RSV, while often causing cold-like symptoms, can lead to serious illness in infants and older adults.
