Respiratory viruses cause rising deaths and hospitalizations in Paraguay and Costa Rica
Health authorities in Paraguay and Costa Rica are reporting significant increases in respiratory virus activity. In Paraguay, the Directorate of Health Surveillance confirmed 28 deaths associated with the simultaneous circulation of rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and metapneumovirus over the last four weeks. Total deaths linked to respiratory viruses in the country have reached 194 for 2026. The most vulnerable groups include children under two years old, adults over 60, and those aged 5 to 19.
In Costa Rica, the National Children's Hospital (HNN) has recorded 11 deaths related to respiratory viruses so far this year. Hospital Director Carlos Jiménez noted that among the deceased, two were healthy children who lacked complete vaccination schedules, while nine others had underlying comorbidities. The hospital is experiencing high occupancy rates, reaching up to 122% capacity for respiratory patients. Rhinovirus and influenza are linked to six of the reported deaths at the HNN.
Health ministries in both regions are urging the public to maintain preventive measures and ensure annual influenza vaccinations, particularly for high-risk groups such as those with diabetes, hypertension, or chronic pulmonary diseases.
