Respiro Libero association to offer free pediatric spirometry in Parma

The Respiro Libero association, in collaboration with the Pediatric Allergology department of the Parma Hospital, is organizing a health awareness event during the Verdi Street Parade in Parma. On Saturday, September 19, the initiative titled ‘Il Provino del Maestro Verdi’ will offer free spirometry tests to children to measure respiratory function and raise awareness about asthma and pediatric allergies caused by pollen, mites, mold, or pet dander.

To engage younger participants, the event includes educational workshops where children can learn about diaphragm mechanics and breathing through games involving pinwheels and soap bubbles. Participants will receive informative booklets and certificates.

Spirometry is a non-invasive, painless test that typically requires children to be at least 5 to 6 years old to ensure adequate cooperation, though tools with animations can allow for reliable results in children aged 3 to 4. The procedure generally lasts between 20 and 40 minutes. Depending on medical advice, certain medications such as short-acting bronchodilators may need to be suspended for 4 to 6 hours prior to the exam.
