Ressano Garcia border modernisation project begins in Mozambique

Construction is underway at the Ressano Garcia Unified Border Post in Maputo province to modernise the land link between Mozambique and South Africa. The project involves an investment of approximately 980 million meticais to rehabilitate and expand facilities, including the construction of six traffic lanes.

The initiative aims to streamline the movement of people and goods by integrating immigration and customs controls and digitising procedures. A primary objective is to significantly reduce transit times; for trucks carrying minerals, waiting times are expected to drop from 45–60 minutes to approximately five minutes. For other cargo, the target is to limit waiting times to 30 minutes.

By integrating information systems across border institutions, the project seeks to enhance data sharing, improve cargo traceability, and speed up customs clearance. The border post is held under concession by Gestão de Terminais e Serviços Aduaneiros (GTSA), which is responsible for the investment, while state sovereignty and border control remain under government authority.
