Restless Legs Syndrome, also known as Willis-Ekbom disease, is a neurological disorder affecting approximately 10% of the population. In Spain, this impacts more than four million people, though only about 2% require pharmacological treatment.
Medical experts note that the condition is frequently misdiagnosed. Approximately 90% of sufferers remain undiagnosed, often because symptoms are mistaken for simple insomnia. Dr. Celia García Malo of the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN) explains that symptoms typically emerge during rest, leading to sleep difficulties.
Due to challenges in primary care diagnosis, patients may face a long medical journey, with the average time to receive a correct diagnosis estimated at eight years.
