Restorative justice model promotes victim reparation in Mexico
The restorative justice model in Mexico is being utilized to facilitate victim reparation and encourage accountability among offenders. According to Israel Cepeda López, a mediator at the Centro Público de Mecanismos Alternativos de Solución de Controversias, the model allows victims to have a voice and enables offenders to understand the consequences of their actions and assume responsibility.
In the current year, more than 210 cases have been initiated and approximately 215 have been concluded. The process is voluntary and operates under principles of confidentiality, neutrality, impartiality, equity, and informed consent. In its initial phase, the model applies to non-intentional crimes, such as injuries, vehicle damage, and robberies committed without violence.
While participation in these processes does not automatically result in the release of an incarcerated individual, it can serve as a factor in legal sentencing benefits. The ultimate goal is to move beyond simple legal consequences toward a system where offenders reflect on their decisions, thereby reducing the risk of recidivism.
