Restored 19th-century Griffin sculptures returned to Granton

Two historic 19th-century Griffin sculptures have been returned to the Granton Waterfront area after being held in storage for more than 50 years. Originally guarding the entrance to Muirhouse Mansion, the sculptures were restored by James Innes & Sons as part of a project to celebrate the region’s archaeological heritage.

The conservation process involved removing 20th-century concrete repairs and recreating missing components, including feet, wings, and beaks. The City of Edinburgh Council has installed the sculptures within Silverlea, a new affordable housing development located near their original site.

This installation marks the final phase of archaeological work at the location, following a 2024 excavation by AOC Archaeology related to the 17th-century Muirhouse Castle. The council is currently delivering over 100 homes at Silverlea, with additional properties expected in early 2027.
