Öresund Strait commuting and passenger travel reach record levels

Commuting and passenger travel across the Öresund Strait have reached record levels. According to recent statistics, the number of commuters increased by 9 percent in 2024 compared to 2023, totaling 21,908 people. This growth is driven entirely by cross-border commuters working in Denmark. Notably, the number of young commuters aged 16 to 24 saw a significant increase of 25 percent during 2024.

Data from the first half of 2026 indicates a continued upward trend, with passenger trips reaching a new record. Average daily passenger trips across the strait—including car, train, and ferry—rose by 3.5 percent to 107,331. Rail travel has shown particularly strong growth, with Øresundstog passenger trips increasing by 7.1 percent compared to the same period in 2025.

Approximately 96 percent of these commuters reside in Sweden and work in Eastern Denmark. While passenger car growth has slowed, freight traffic has returned to positive growth, surpassing the previous record set in 2025.
