Retail and hospitality sectors show mixed economic performance in Germany and Austria

Economic data from July 2026 shows divergent trends in the retail and hospitality sectors across Baden-Württemberg and Carinthia.

In Baden-Württemberg, Germany, real turnover in the hospitality sector fell by 4.5 percent, with gastronomy specifically seeing a 5.0 percent decline. Retail turnover in the region decreased by 0.8 percent. Both sectors reported a reduction in the number of active employees. While nominal revenues in hospitality rose by 2.9 percent due to price changes, the real value declined.

In Carinthia, Austria, the retail sector is showing signs of stabilization. While national Austrian retail saw a nominal increase of 2.7 percent and a real increase of 2.3 percent, local businesses in Carinthia face ongoing challenges. Despite signs of recovery, high costs for personnel, energy, rent, and financing continue to put pressure on profit margins.
