Retail health clinics offer alternatives to U.S. healthcare challenges

Public perception of the U.S. healthcare system remains largely negative, with Gallup data indicating that 70% of Americans view the system unfavorably. Challenges such as rising costs, long wait times, and difficulty accessing primary care appointments contribute to this sentiment, alongside a projected shortage of more than 70,000 primary care physicians by 2038.

Retail health clinics are emerging as an alternative for routine medical needs. These clinics provide acute, preventive, and chronic care, often with transparent upfront pricing. Examples include MinuteClinic, located within CVS Pharmacy stores, which offers services such as vaccinations, routine screenings, and management for chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure.

Digital and virtual options are also expanding. MinuteClinic Virtual Care provides 24/7 access for common illnesses and chronic condition management. Some locations have introduced message-based care and virtual weight loss programs that may include access to GLP-1 medications.
