Retail investors hit nine-year high in stock allocations
Retail investors are significantly increasing their exposure to equities, with stock allocations reaching 71.8% in September. This represents a nine-year high and the second-highest reading since July 2000, according to data from the American Association of Individual Investors (AAII).
As equity allocations rise, cash holdings have dropped to 13.3%, a nine-year low that remains well below the historical average of 22.5%. Despite this high level of investment, AAII data indicated that 53.3% of surveyed investors expressed bearish sentiment as of mid-September.
In broader market activity, U.S. stock futures faced downward pressure due to rising Treasury yields and concerns regarding the financing of artificial intelligence investments. While 30-year Treasury yields reached 24-year highs, retail sentiment on platforms like Stocktwits remains ‘extremely bullish’ for major indices such as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100.
