Retail market shifts as consumers favor large shopping malls

Corporate communications expert Səfər Aslanov explains that the shift in consumer preference from small shops to large shopping malls is driven by the 'one-stop shop' principle. Consumers increasingly seek to save time by combining clothing, food, entertainment, and services in a single location.

As part of the 'experience economy,' shopping malls serve as social hubs offering amenities such as cafes, cinemas, and children's zones that individual stores cannot provide. Additional value is created through air conditioning, security, ample parking, and standardized return policies.

While this trend creates pressure on small businesses with low margins and little differentiation, it does not signal their total disappearance. Instead, the market is segmenting. Small shops are transitioning from mass consumption to serving neighborhood-level needs or providing niche, specialized products where they can offer deeper expertise than the broad variety found in malls.
