Retail shifts: Price真棧 closures in Hong Kong and Kroger's potential Shenzhen entry

The retail landscape in the Greater Bay Area is undergoing significant shifts. In Hong Kong, the budget supermarket chain Price真棧 (Price Zhen Zhan) has announced the closure of multiple locations, including its Prince Edward branch and a Mong Kok Wo Tao Road outlet scheduled to close on August 24. Observers attribute these closures to intense competition from e-commerce platforms like Taobao and Pinduoduo, as well as a perceived decline in product variety.

Simultaneously, the Shenzhen retail market is seeing new developments. Reports suggest that the century-old American retailer Kroger may be entering the Chinese market via Shenzhen, potentially adopting a membership-based model similar to Sam's Club or Costco. Additionally, Meituan is expanding its offline presence with the upcoming launch of its Xiaoxiang Supermarket flagship store in Futian, which will offer a ‘buy and cook’ service. Other notable retail entries in Shenzhen include the community-focused Happy Monkey supermarket in Longgang and specialized snack retailers in Nanshan and Futian.
