Retail Store Closures Accelerate in German Cities Essen and Saarbrücken

In Essen, the city centre has seen a sharp rise in vacant storefronts as major retailers pull out. The closure of Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof at Limbecker Platz in August 2024 marked a key loss, and foot traffic on the Kettwiger Straße fell from about 29,000 shoppers on a Saturday in March 2020 to roughly 13,000 a year later. The city is investing €30 million to remodel the former Karstadt space for mixed‑use purposes, but analysts cite the growth of online shopping and the pandemic as the primary drivers of the decline.

A similar pattern is evident in Saarbrücken, where 30 notable shops have disappeared since 2022. Among the closures are Vero Moda, Villeroy & Boch, and the historic Café Schubert, which filed for insolvency in 2023 after decades of operation. The losses reflect a broader challenge for German city centres, where e‑commerce and changing consumer habits are eroding the viability of traditional brick‑and‑mortar retail.

Both cities illustrate the nationwide trend of shrinking high‑street commerce, prompting local authorities to consider redevelopment and diversification strategies to revive their urban cores.
