Retail technology trends shift toward operational efficiency
Ahead of the inaugural RTIH Retail Technology Hot 100 List, judging panel member and Holland & Barrett Group CFO Vineta Bajaj notes a significant shift in retail technology trends. The focus has moved away from high-profile consumer-facing tools, such as chatbots and AI copilots, toward more practical, background-oriented solutions.
Bajaj argues that the most successful technologies this year are those addressing fundamental operational challenges, such as inventory accuracy, shelf availability, and warehouse efficiency. Unlike previous years dominated by flashy interfaces, current leaders in the sector prioritize solving routine tasks and managing data discipline to ensure real-world profitability.
Furthermore, autonomy in retail has transitioned from experimental projects to economically viable tools. Recent advancements in warehouse robotics, shelf scanning, and last-mile delivery are now being evaluated based on concrete metrics like cost per pick and cost per drop, rather than mere novelty.
