Retail theft in Germany: Couple faces court over self-service checkout incident

A couple from Anzing recently appeared before the Ebersberg District Court following an attempted theft at a large retail chain in Poing. The pair allegedly attempted to steal groceries valued at 102 euros by holding items high enough to avoid detection by self-service checkout scanners. The legal proceedings were concluded with a 1,000-euro fine imposed by Judge Anne Leiding.

This incident highlights a broader trend in German retail. According to statistics from the EHI Retail Institute, shoplifting by customers is estimated to cause annual losses of approximately 3.05 billion euros. Data suggests that nearly 24.4 million thefts go undetected each year, with an average loss of 123 euros per incident. The institute notes that over 98 percent of such thefts are either not detected or not reported.
