Retailers expand in Slovakia with new off-price and unmanned models
The retail landscape in Slovakia is seeing significant shifts through new business models and expansions. Modivo is launching Shockprice, an off-price retail chain, in western Slovakia. The chain aims to compete with retailers like Pepco and Action by offering branded goods, seasonal clearance items, and various categories including fashion, sports, electronics, and home decor at discounted prices. The stores are expected to range between 1,200 and 2,500 square meters and will target smaller towns.
Simultaneously, the supermarket chain Kraj has introduced an unmanned shopping model at its location in Bratislava. Following standard staffed hours, the store transitions to a fully self-service mode where customers access the premises via a QR code registration system. This allows for shopping during extended hours, such as overnight from 20:00 to 06:30 on weekdays, utilizing self-service kiosks and checkouts to maintain operations when staffing is not economically viable.
