Retatrutide: Unapproved weight-loss drug linked to deaths and unexpected side effects
Retatrutide, an experimental weight-loss drug currently in clinical trials by Eli Lilly, is being sold through unapproved online channels. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has stated the drug has not been found safe or effective for any condition, and federal law prohibits pharmacies from compounding it.
Reports have emerged of severe adverse events, including two deaths involving cardiac arrest and dehydration after patients used versions obtained from unreliable sources. Much of this unregulated supply is traced to Chinese factories that advertise on social media and ship products via mail for cryptocurrency.
A study by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, published in JAMA Network Open, utilized artificial intelligence to analyze approximately 150,000 Reddit posts from users claiming to use the unapproved medication. The AI analysis uncovered unexpected symptom patterns; notably, increased appetite was a common complaint among users, which contradicts the drug’s intended purpose of appetite suppression and differs from the digestive issues primarily identified in Phase 2 clinical trials.
