Rete Ferroviaria Italiana begins Città di Castello-Sansepolcro rail renewal
Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) has launched an operational program to renew the 17-kilometer Città di Castello-Sansepolcro railway line, spanning the Umbria and Tuscany regions. Funded through the 2021-2027 Fsc programming, the project is part of a broader modernization effort for the Ferrovia Centrale Umbra.
Work began on September 7 with vegetation clearing and rail unloading. The schedule includes the demolition of old tracks between September 14 and December 1, followed by the installation of new tracks from November 7, 2026, to January 14, 2027. Additional works on the Sansepolcro station switches are expected in June 2027.
The track renewal is the initial phase of a larger program involving civil engineering works on bridges, underpasses, and station infrastructure. Major interventions on bridges, such as the one over the Regnano stream, are scheduled to begin in October 2026.
