Retezat National Park issues safety warnings for hikers

Retezat National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and Romania's oldest national park, is a significant destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The park features 20 peaks exceeding 2,000 meters, 80 glacial lakes, and some of Europe's last remaining virgin forests. It serves as a vital habitat for diverse wildlife, including brown bears, wolves, lynxes, and approximately 120 bird species.

Park administration has issued warnings to tourists regarding safety and environmental protection. Visitors are strictly advised to stick to official, marked hiking trails and approved mountaineering routes. Authorities caution against using unofficial shortcuts or paths promoted on social media, noting that visible tracks may be intended exclusively for professionals such as foresters, mountain rescue, or researchers. Deviating from official routes can lead to difficult navigation, increased physical risk, and damage to vulnerable flora and fauna.
