Rethymno: A journey through the historic city of Crete

Rethymno, located in the heart of Crete between Chania and Heraklion, is characterized by its blend of history, architecture, and maritime atmosphere. The city’s Old Town is one of the best-preserved historical settlements on the island, featuring narrow alleys, old mansions, and a mix of Venetian and Ottoman architectural elements.

Key historical landmarks include the Rimondi Fountain, a notable Venetian monument, and the Neratzia Mosque, which originally served as a temple dedicated to the Panagia of the Augustinians before being converted into a mosque. The Fortezza, an imposing fortress built on Paleokastro Hill in the late 16th century to defend against Ottoman threats, offers panoramic views of the city and the Cretan Sea.
