Rethymno attack on a 69‑year‑old sheep farmer captured on security video, four suspects arrested
On 6 September 2024 a 69‑year‑old sheep farmer was violently attacked at his mountain shelter in Vilandredo, Rethymno, Crete. The attacker approached on foot through difficult terrain, concealed his face with a stocking, carried a large knife and had no mobile phone to avoid electronic tracking. He shot the victim multiple times in the limbs and inflicted a severe injury to his tongue.
Security cameras installed by the farmer recorded the whole incident. Police analysed the footage for the assailant’s gait, posture and equipment, which allowed them to identify six individuals believed to be involved and to arrest four men aged 42, 52, 55 and 66. The investigation continues to establish motives and any broader criminal network.
