Rethymno wildfire investigation focuses on suspect captured on video
A large wildfire broke out on 30 July 2023 in the village of Asomatos, Rethymno, Crete, and quickly spread to the Preveli pine forest, burning thousands of hectares, destroying homes, farms, livestock and tourism facilities. Strong winds accelerated the fire’s rapid expansion. Two forest firefighters died while fighting a separate blaze in Kriá Vrysi.
The Directorate for Investigation of Arson Crimes (Δ.Α.Ε.Ε.) is reviewing security‑camera footage that recorded a man in black clothing moving near the ignition point. The video shows the man lingering among shrubs for about 46 seconds before leaving the area, after which smoke and flames appeared. Authorities are collecting additional video from surrounding cameras and interviewing residents to map the suspect’s movements and to identify him. The investigation also considers the possibility of malicious arson, especially in connection with the fire at Kriá Vrysi, which is under criminal investigation for a potential link to the local power network. The case remains open and no suspect has yet been formally charged.
