Crete wildfire: Israeli tourist arrested after barbecue sparks blaze

A 35-year-old Israeli tourist has been arrested following a significant wildfire in the Sellia area of Rethymno, Crete. The fire broke out on the evening of August 14 near a rented villa, reportedly triggered by the use of a barbecue despite high fire risk warnings.

Local authorities issued emergency 112 alerts, leading to the preventive evacuation of residents in Fotinari and Souda. The blaze was fought by approximately 89 firefighters, multiple vehicles, and helicopters. While the fire caused damage to olive groves and property, it was brought under control without casualties.

The villa owner issued a public apology to local residents, stating that guests had been informed both upon arrival and in writing that using barbecues was strictly prohibited during high-wind and high-risk conditions. The suspect is facing judicial proceedings in Rethymno.
