Rethymno MP calls for urgent staffing of veterinary services

Rethymno MP Manolis Chnaris has submitted a parliamentary report calling for the urgent reinforcement of the Veterinary Department of the Directorate of Rural Development and Veterinary Services in Rethymno. The request follows documentation from the Crete Region regarding severe understaffing.

The department currently oversees eight slaughterhouses. During non-peak periods, approximately 800 small ruminants are slaughtered daily, while during holiday periods, this number rises to 2,500 units per day, alongside 1,500 pigs daily and the operation of poultry and rabbit slaughterhouses.

Officials warn that the lack of veterinarians creates a high-pressure work environment with a risk of accidents. The shortage also causes delays in serving citizens and professionals, increases administrative burdens, and threatens the effectiveness of critical inspections, such as zoonosis prevention and food production facility approvals. To address these issues before the upcoming Christmas and New Year period, Chnaris is requesting the addition of three new veterinarians and two administrative staff members.
