Rethymno MP criticizes healthcare shortages at General Hospital

Manolis Chnaris, a PASOK – Movement for Change MP for Rethymno, has submitted a parliamentary question to the Minister of Health regarding the critical operational state of the General Hospital of Rethymno (GNR).

Chnaris reports that the hospital is severely understaffed, with only 60% of organic positions filled. This shortage impacts medical and nursing staff, who face high workloads, and forces citizens to seek private healthcare. The situation is exacerbated during summer months due to increased tourism.

The Emergency Department reportedly operates with only two doctors, often relying on staff transfers from health centers or inexperienced trainee and rural doctors to cover shifts. This staffing crisis also affects several clinics, including Surgery, Internal Medicine, and Neurology.
