Rethymno police dismantle criminal group involved in fraud and drugs
Police in Rethymno dismantled a family-run criminal organization in the Mylopotamos region following a multi-month investigation. The operation resulted in the arrest of 10 individuals, including eight Greek nationals and two foreign workers.
The group is accused of multiple offenses, including the formation of a criminal organization, drug trafficking, and fraud involving livestock subsidies through OPEKEPE. Investigations revealed that members used fraudulent methods, such as moving livestock between herds to misrepresent ownership during inspections, to secure illegal subsidies.
During the large-scale police operation, authorities seized 995 grams of cannabis, an 11-plant cannabis plantation with stalks up to 3 meters tall, three knives, two precision scales, 18 mobile phones, and 1,850 euros in suspected criminal proceeds. Additional seizures included seven passenger cars, one light commercial vehicle, and a piece of construction machinery. The group reportedly used their illegal profits to purchase both movable and immovable property.
