Rethymno Port installs pollution monitoring sensors
The Rethymno Municipal Port Fund has installed specialized instruments and sensors to measure airborne particulate matter within the port's land zone. The equipment will remain operational for one year to facilitate scientific monitoring and modeling of dust dispersion.
This initiative is being conducted in collaboration with the Atmospheric Aerosol Laboratory of the School of Chemical, Environmental, and Process Engineering at the Technical University of Crete. The project aims to systematically record real-time pollutant concentration levels, atmospheric changes, and peak dispersion patterns within the urban fabric.
The data collected will create a scientifically backed map to assist in designing sustainable prevention measures and infrastructure. The goal is to balance port activities with the environmental health of the nearby historic old town, marina, and tourism zones, ensuring minimal nuisance to local social and economic activities.
