Rethymno to honor repeat tourists with tree adoption initiative

To celebrate World Tourism Day on September 27, the city of Rethymno is introducing a new initiative to honor repeat visitors by allowing them to ‘adopt’ a tree. These trees will be planted throughout the city, serving as a living symbol of the travelers' lasting connection to the destination.

According to Pepy Birliraki, Vice President of the Rethymno Hoteliers Association, the initiative aims to connect the celebration with the message of sustainability. This allows visitors to leave a permanent footprint in the city and watch their specific tree grow during subsequent visits.

The local tourism sector is currently experiencing a strong season, with high hotel occupancy rates through the end of September. More than 30 hotels are expected to remain operational into October before a gradual decline in activity begins in November.
