Romania updates waste management and environmental monitoring
Waste management initiatives are expanding across several Romanian regions. In Timiș, RETIM has issued reminders to residents in Zones 0 and 1 regarding correct waste separation. This includes specific instructions for glass (green containers), plastic, metal, paper, and cardboard (yellow containers), and residual waste (black containers). Additionally, a pilot project for biodegradable waste is being introduced across nine markets in Timișoara.
In Constanța County, the Integrated Waste Management System (SMID) has become fully operational as of September 1, 2026. This system covers 57 administrative-territorial units across three collection zones, following the operationalization of Zones 1 and 3. The Dobrogea Intercommunity Development Association manages these services, which include collection, transport, sorting, and treatment.
Meanwhile, in Botoșani and Suceava counties, the Suceava County Environmental Directorate (DJM) is conducting air quality monitoring campaigns near closed or closing waste depots. These efforts, utilizing mobile laboratories, aim to assess the environmental impact of these sites, with results to be made public via official environmental directorate websites.
