Retini to honor Cretan Volunteer Regiment from 1912
Residents of Retini, Pieria, are organizing commemorative events on October 17 and 18, 2026, to honor the 1st Independent Regiment of Cretan Volunteers, also known as the Kolokotronis Regiment. This initiative aims to highlight a previously lesser-known historical chapter from the 1912 Balkan Wars.
The regiment, consisting of approximately 1,000 young Cretan volunteers, was commanded by Georgios Kolokotronis, the grandson of Theodoros Kolokotronis. The unit played a significant role in the liberation of Macedonia and Epirus from Ottoman rule, participating in various battles, being among the first to enter Thessaloniki, and liberating Chalkidiki. The upcoming ceremonies in Retini, the first village liberated by the unit, seek to preserve the memory of these volunteers and their sacrifices in the historical records of Pieria, Macedonia, and Crete.
