Retinol and tretinoin potency differences explained

While over-the-counter retinol and prescription tretinoin both belong to the vitamin A derivative family, they differ significantly in potency and chemical function. Retinol acts as a precursor that requires skin enzymes to convert it into its active form, retinoic acid. Because only a small percentage of applied retinol is successfully converted, higher concentrations are often required to achieve results.

In contrast, tretinoin is already 100% the active form of retinoic acid. This means it does not require chemical conversion and loses no potency during application. Research published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology indicates that while retinol can produce similar cellular changes to retinoic acid, it requires substantially higher concentrations to do so, making percentage labels on products potentially misleading when comparing the two.
