Türker Ertürk arrested over political remarks

Retired Admiral Türker Ertürk has been arrested by Turkish authorities following an investigation into remarks made in video content shared on social media. The Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated the investigation on its own initiative, charging Ertürk with threatening to create fear and panic among the public and inciting the commission of a crime.

The investigation centers on statements Ertürk made in television programs, which were later circulated online. In the footage, Ertürk remarked that the government would change, “painfully or painlessly,” and urged the Supreme Election Board to decide according to law and conscience to avoid future national difficulties.

During his court testimony, Ertürk defended his actions as political analysis rather than criminal threats. He noted that the video clips were taken out of context and that the original broadcasts occurred approximately 3.5 years and 11 years ago. His lawyer, Ayhan Yıldızel, criticized the speed of the legal response, noting that an investigation was launched only eight hours after the clips resurfaced on social media. Ertürk has been sent to Metris Prison.
