Retired NYPD Chief Anthony Izzo found dead in Long Island pool

Retired NYPD Chief Anthony Izzo, 75, died Friday evening following a drowning accident in the backyard pool of his Long Island home in Stony Brook. His body was discovered by a family member around 7:45 p.m.

First responders from the Stony Brook Fire Department and the Sixth Precinct performed CPR before transporting Izzo to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities stated that investigators do not suspect foul play and believe the death was non-criminal.

Izzo had a career in law enforcement spanning nearly four decades, beginning in 1968 as a 17-year-old trainee. He rose through the ranks to hold several significant leadership positions, including commanding officer of the 115th Precinct in Queens and the 75th Precinct in Brooklyn. In 2006, he was appointed to command the NYPD Organized Crime Control Bureau, overseeing approximately 2,100 detectives.
