Retired police and firefighters protest pension rights in Taiwan
Over 500 retired police and firefighters gathered in front of the Executive Yuan to protest the government's failure to implement pension reforms. Led by Taiwan People's Party Chairman Huang Kuo-chang, the demonstrators demanded that the administration fulfill the legal requirements of the amended Police Personnel Act, which aims to increase the maximum replacement rate of retirement income to 80% with retroactive effect.
Protesters expressed frustration that while the legislature passed the amendment and the President promulgated the law, the Executive Yuan has failed to allocate the necessary budget for implementation. Huang Kuo-chang criticized Premier Cho Jung-tai for failing to execute the law, arguing that the administration cannot use constitutional review requests as an excuse to withhold benefits that have already been legally established.
Representatives from retired police and fire associations stated that they are not seeking special privileges but are demanding the legal protections they earned through years of high-risk service. Some participants noted that they have already initiated group lawsuits in administrative courts to secure their rights.
