Retired police officer arrested after gunfire at Yeni Parti congress in Mersin

A retired police officer, identified as B. Y., has been arrested following a shooting incident during a Yeni Parti district congress in the Mezitli district of Mersin.

The incident occurred on September 27 at a local retirement home during the party's district chairmanship elections. Tensions escalated between Yeni Parti Mersin Provincial Secretary Eren Yücesoy and the driver of Mezitli Mayor Ahmet Serkan Tuncer, leading to a physical altercation involving various groups. During the chaos, B. Y. reportedly fired a handgun into the air.

Police officers on site detained the suspect and seized the weapon. Following legal proceedings at the courthouse, B. Y. was formally arrested. This event follows a separate incident in the Yenişehir district earlier in September, where four suspects were arrested in connection with gunfire directed at party offices.
