A series of suicides within the Turkish police force and among retirees has drawn intense scrutiny following the death of 60-year-old retired police officer Ali Şekeroğlu. Şekeroğlu died by suicide during a protest in front of the Constitutional Court in Ankara, where retirees were demanding a flat-rate salary increase (seyyanen zam) to match benefits given to active civil servants in 2023.

Reports indicate a broader trend of distress within the law enforcement community. In a short period, five police officers and retirees reportedly died by suicide across Ankara, Şırnak, Tekirdağ, and Kocaeli. The Police Force Union highlighted that four such incidents occurred within just two days, involving a member in Yalova and another in Manisa.

Statistical data provided by the Emniyet Suicide Monument indicates that 82 active-duty officers died by suicide in 2025, while 68 law enforcement members had died by suicide as of the reported date in 2026. The Union has called for urgent improvements to the social, cultural, and economic rights of officers, as well as the implementation of a new professional law to address these systemic issues.
