Retired police officer sentenced to life for killing cousin in Samsun

A retired police officer, Cemil Çakır (70), has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his cousin, Bahittin Çakır (76), in the Salıpazarı district of Samsun.

The incident occurred on July 29, 2025, stemming from a long-standing land dispute. According to court records, Cemil Çakır intercepted Bahittin Çakır while he was traveling to a field in an agricultural vehicle. Following an argument, the retired officer shot and killed his cousin. The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended approximately eight hours later at a vineyard house.

The Çarşamba Heavy Penal Court rejected the defendant's claim of self-defense, noting that no weapons were found belonging to the victim and no evidence of an unjust attack against the defendant was presented. Furthermore, the court declined to apply discretionary reductions for remorse, citing the defendant's flight from the scene. In addition to the life sentence for intentional murder, Çakır received 2 years and 6 months in prison and a fine for violating laws regarding unlicensed firearms.
